Some Muppets sing. Some tell jokes. Others try to keep the show from falling apart.
Crazy Harry from The Muppet Show just wants to blow things up.
With his wild eyes, messy hair, huge grin, and trusty detonator, Crazy Harry became one of the strangest characters in Muppet history.
He was never one of the biggest Muppet stars. However, he did not need much screen time to make an impression.
Usually, all it took was one word.
“Bang.”
“Blast.”
“Dynamite.”
Then Harry would appear.
And something would explode.
Crazy Harry Started Out as Crazy Donald
The history of Crazy Harry began before The Muppet Show became a weekly series.
He first appeared in the 1974 television special The Muppets Valentine Show. At the time, however, he had a different name.
He was called Crazy Donald.
Even then, the basic character was already there. He loved explosions, chaos, and making things go boom.
Soon afterward, the Muppets changed his name.
When the character appeared in the 1975 pilot The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence, he was known as Crazy Harry.
That name stuck.
Crazy Harry Joins The Muppet Show
Once The Muppet Show became a regular series, Crazy Harry found the perfect home.
The show was already filled with chaos.
Kermit struggled to keep everything under control. Gonzo performed dangerous stunts. Miss Piggy caused drama. Animal destroyed whatever happened to be nearby.
Crazy Harry simply added explosives to the mix.
One of his best-known jokes was also one of the simplest.
Someone would mention a word connected to explosions.
Harry would suddenly appear with a detonator.
Then came the boom.
It was predictable, but that was part of the fun.
Fans often knew exactly what was coming before the other characters did.
Crazy Harry Was Part of the Muppet Orchestra
Believe it or not, Crazy Harry had another job.
During the early days of The Muppet Show, he appeared as part of the Muppet Orchestra.
He even played the triangle.
Of course, putting Crazy Harry near a musical instrument was probably never going to stay peaceful for long.
Eventually, his musical talents became much louder.
Meet the Explodaphone
One of Crazy Harry’s funniest moments came during a performance with guest star Jean Stapleton.
She performed the song “I’m Just Wild About Harry.”
Naturally, Crazy Harry joined her.
However, he did not play an ordinary instrument.
Instead, he played something called the explodaphone.
The instrument used plungers that triggered explosions around the stage.
As the song continued, Harry set off blast after blast.
Parts of the set were destroyed.
For most musicians, that would probably end the performance.
For Crazy Harry, it was simply part of the show.
Never Say “Dynamite” Around Crazy Harry
Crazy Harry’s running joke worked best when another character accidentally gave him an excuse to use his detonator.
Guest star Ben Vereen learned that lesson.
During his appearance on The Muppet Show, Vereen had to deal with Harry’s explosive interruptions.
Then he made the mistake of describing the show as “dynamite.”
For most people, that would be a compliment.
For Crazy Harry, it was a command.
Boom.
That simple joke captured everything fans loved about the character.
Crazy Harry and Gonzo Were a Dangerous Team
Gonzo already had a terrible sense of personal safety.
He loved cannons, dangerous stunts, and ideas that no reasonable person would attempt.
So, naturally, pairing him with Crazy Harry was a bad idea.
It was also hilarious.
Harry sometimes helped with Gonzo’s stunts. Unfortunately for Gonzo, Crazy Harry was not exactly known for using the correct amount of explosives.
Together, the two characters represented the wild side of The Muppet Show.
Gonzo supplied the terrible idea.
Harry supplied the boom.
Who Performed Crazy Harry?
Crazy Harry became closely associated with legendary Muppet performer Jerry Nelson.
Nelson performed many famous characters throughout the Jim Henson universe.
His characters included Count von Count, Floyd Pepper, Robin the Frog, and many others.
Crazy Harry was very different from those characters.
Harry was pure chaos.
There was no long speech or complicated personality needed.
A wild laugh, a detonator, and an explosion were often enough.
In later Muppet productions, Matt Vogel took over the role.
That allowed Crazy Harry to keep appearing long after the original Muppet Show ended.
Crazy Harry Goes to the Movies
Crazy Harry did not disappear when The Muppet Show ended.
He continued to appear in Muppet movies, television specials, music videos, and other productions.
Harry appeared in classic films such as:
- The Muppet Movie
- The Great Muppet Caper
- The Muppets Take Manhattan
He also returned in later Muppet projects.
One memorable appearance came in the Muppets’ 2009 version of “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Then he returned again in Disney’s 2011 movie The Muppets.
In that film, Harry uses explosives to blast his own image into Mount Rushmore.
It is completely ridiculous.
In other words, it is perfect for Crazy Harry.
Why Crazy Harry Is So Funny
Crazy Harry proves that a Muppet does not need a complicated personality to be memorable.
His entire character can almost be explained in one sentence.
Crazy Harry loves explosions.
However, the timing makes the joke work.
A scene might be completely normal.
Then someone says the wrong word.
Suddenly, Harry appears.
The audience knows what is about to happen.
The other Muppets often know too.
But nobody can stop it.
Boom.
That kind of controlled chaos was a huge part of what made The Muppet Show special.
He Represents the Chaos of The Muppet Show
Every major Muppet represents a different style of comedy.
Fozzie wants to make people laugh.
Miss Piggy wants to be a star.
Sam the Eagle wants everything to be respectable.
Gonzo wants to attempt the impossible.
Kermit just wants to get through the show.
Crazy Harry wants to destroy the set.
That made him useful.
Whenever things became too calm, Harry could appear and instantly change the scene.
Sometimes literally.
A Small Character With a Big Impact
Crazy Harry was never as famous as Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie, or Gonzo.
Still, fans remember him.
That is impressive when you consider how little he sometimes had to do.
He could appear for only a few seconds and still steal the scene.
His wild look helped.
His laugh helped too.
But mostly, fans knew that when Crazy Harry appeared, something was about to go very wrong.
And very loud.
Crazy Harry Is Still a Blast
Crazy Harry has been causing trouble in the Muppet universe for more than 50 years.
He started as Crazy Donald in 1974.
Then he became the explosion-loving maniac fans remember from The Muppet Show.
Over the years, he has blown up stages, interrupted performances, helped Gonzo with dangerous stunts, and appeared throughout Muppet movies and specials.
His joke has never been complicated.
It does not need to be.
Crazy Harry has a detonator.
Something is going to explode.
And somehow, after all these years, it is still funny.
So if Crazy Harry is standing nearby, remember one important rule.
