If you’ve been hanging around the fan portal lately, you already know the vibe. We’ve been updating the wiki, tracking the news, and sitting on our hands waiting for the Mouse House to do the obvious thing.
But it’s now mid-April, and I just have to say it: It is absolutely insane that Disney hasn’t officially greenlit more episodes of The Muppet Show yet.
Let’s look at the facts. Back on February 4th, Disney dropped the 50th-anniversary The Muppet Show special on Disney+ and ABC. Seth Rogen produced it, Sabrina Carpenter and Maya Rudolph knocked it out of the park as guest stars, and for the first time in what feels like decades, the Muppets actually felt like the Muppets again. It was pure variety show chaos, slapstick, and surreal humor. It hit a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, pulled in millions of viewers, and proved the old magic is still alive.
So, where is the greenlight for a full series?
The 2026 Special Was Literally a Backdoor Pilot
They practically spoon-fed us the setup. The special was widely reported as a backdoor pilot for a potential full revival. Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, and the rest of the gang were back in the Muppet Theatre, dusting off the lights and getting ready to put on a show. They built the set. They brought back the classic format.
If you are an executive staring at a massive hit that pleased the hardcore purists and brought in a brand-new audience, what is the hold-up? Why are we dragging our feet? Are we going to let this momentum just fizzle out again?
The Muppets Belong in a Variety Format
For years, we watched the franchise get shoved into weird mockumentary boxes, internet-short concepts, and dramatized breakup storylines that just didn’t click. The magic of Jim Henson’s original vision was always the frantic, backstage, vaudeville energy. The February special proved that the 1976 formula still works flawlessly in 2026.
I’m telling you, as someone who spends hours coding quiz plugins and managing this community, the fan appetite is starving for a regular, weekly Muppet Show. We don’t want another one-off special in three years. We want the curtain to go up every single week.
It’s Time to Play the Music
Listen, maybe the ink is drying on the contracts behind closed doors. Maybe they’re just waiting for the right corporate earnings call to drop the press release. But the radio silence is deafening. It’s time to stop overthinking the franchise and just let the Muppets do what they do best: put on a chaotic, beautiful show.
